Book Review: 'Seven' is high on my list of favorite historical mysteries.
Summary: 5 Stars
I remember seeing this book when it was first released, and reading the 'Twin Peaks' connection (the author co-created 'Peaks' with David Lynch) and then reading the book description, and being disappointed enough that it wasn't a Twin Peaks-esque story he had written to put the book down and pass over it.
Several years later, I came across the title again, and this time gave it a go. As historical mysteries go, Seven is pretty high on my list.
Using a pre-Holmes Arthur Conan Doyle as the protagonist for the tale is a stroke of literary brilliance. Who better, other than Holmes himself, to send off on a Victorian-era mystery repleat with demons, charlatans, and feats of other-worldy legerdemain than the man who created Englands most well-known solver of such conundrums?
While I confess to not knowing enough about Dr. Doyle himself to ascertain the historical accuracy of his character in this novel, it does seem legitimate that the thirst for adventure he infused into Holmes would indeed be a spill-over from his own self.
The story starts off with an impassioned plea for his presence at a gathering. Doyle finds himself attending a seance, which is an attempt to determine the location of a missing boy. However, all is not as it seems, which Doyle quickly determines as the seance turns deadly, and all the 'smoke and mirrors' terror becomes quite real.
Doyle is then thrust into action as he attempts to sort out the grisly facts of what he witnessed, and finds his own life again in danger.
Racing back and forth across the English countryside by carriage, avoiding death's grip once again by a nocturnal escape by boat, and finally boarding a train for lesser-traversed parts of the UK, Doyle narrowly escapes the grim reaper's grasp time after time, only to find himself, inevitably, face to face with the author of the fiendish plot he has been attempting to thwart.
A fine bit of escapism, The List of Seven is sure to whet the appetites of Sherlock Holmes fans old and new for more historical mysteries involving the creator of the famed detective. Unlike a similar series of books involving the famed Edgar Allen Poe that I have read, Mark Frost's debut novel is sure to delight.
