Book Review: Good Look at the Middle East Conflict - But is it Believable?
Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book, and if you enjoy Le Carre's other books you will find more of the same here. The book is detailed, and sometimes moves a little slow, but again, this is the standard Le Carre format. In fact, I found this book more readable than his earlier works, though he still has the annoying (at least to me) habit of introducing characters so abruptly and without warning that you are left to flip through the pages you just read to make sure you did not miss anything!
According to the introduction, Le Carre did quite a bit of research for this book on both sides of the conflict, and it shows. The author's struggle with the two sides of the conflict comes through in the book - it is a difficult problem and it is hard to know who the "good guys" are, if there are any. What you get is a story that plunges you deep into this conflict on both sides, and I found myself at times very emotionally involved with many of the characters. Some of the book is difficult to read just from the standpoint of the injustice of some of the situations - made more difficult by the fact that many of the situations are based somewhat in fact. In the end, even though this book is several decades old, ity is timely and still very relevant.
Very Minor Spoilers Follow:
I do have one major problem with the plot of the book. I just do not find it believable that the main character of the book could be drawn in so easily to become an agent for Israel. A one night interview after being kidnapped? Come one - she did not even really know for sure who these people are! And then she does a dangerous job for them that could have gotten her many years in prison - all on their word that they would care for her? I do not buy it - but do not let it keep you from experiencing the rest of the book.
