Whether you are actually planning a trip to London, or you just want to be mentally taken away to another time and place for a while, you will love this excellent guided tour that stops at 17 locations throughout the city.
"The London Tapes" is wonderfully narrated by Juliet Stevenson("Truly, Madly, Deeply").There are four separate walking tours with 3 to 5 stops at places of great historical interest along the route of each tour. The drama unfolds as actors re-enact the events that took place over the last thousand years with music to make you feel like you have gone back in time.
Just follow the enclosed map of the city. Each tour is designated by a different color, and also describes the various stops. Tour 1 covers 'From Romans to Shakespeare'. you'll visit The Tower of London, Traitors Gate, The River Thames at London Bridge, Winchester Palace and The Globe Theatre. Next up is 'Wren to Jones'. On this route you'll visit St. Paul's Cathedral, Smithfield, St. Clement Danes and Covent Garden.Tour 3 will take you through 'A Gentleman's London' and the route includes Piccadilly Circus','Burlington House and Piccadilly' and 'St. James Palace'.Lastly Tour 4 has you sitting in on 'Royal London and Parliamentarians'. The stops include The House of Parliament, The Banqueting House, Horse Guards Parade, The Cabinet War Rooms and of course Buckingham Palace.
It's a fabulous and entertaining guide through the centuries. Imagine yourself in the exact place and time William Wallace lost his life, the terror of a Viking raid or celebrating a Royal wedding. Miss Stevenson gives exact directions and descriptions for you to follow throughout each tour. You can take the tours in any order you want(Tour One is recommended as first).If you are actually going to London, you would just turn off the tape until you arrive at each location. You will have about 4 to 8 minutes worth of enlightening entertainment at each stop(of course, no one says you can't do one place more then once if you want). There are 2 tapes, with a tour on each side. The sound quality is excellent.
Transport yourself to days of olde, even if you do it from your home or car. Okay, I'd write more, but next stop..Paris..ooh la la!
