Jon Stebbins, the author of the highly acclaimed Dennis Wilson biography, The Real Beach Boy, has returned to the tangled and turbulent history of "America's band" only this time the subject matter is one of the (unfairly) lesser known and often glossed over participants in their endlessly fascinating story. David Marks, thrust into the spotlight of the white-hot American pop music furnace of the early 60s, was only 13 in 1962 when he became one of the original signatures on the Beach Boys Capitol records contract.He featured on at least four of their early albums and countless classic tracks as rhythm guitarist but by October the following year he was gone and, as far as the Beach Boys management (the Wilson brothers' dad, Murry) was concerned, was persona non grata in the music business, seemingly for having the temerity to stand up to him. Nothing, however, in BB world is ever that cut and dried and the real story and subsequent events in David's turbulent and often troubled life make this one of the best BB-related reads in a long time. Whilst biographers of Brian Wilson tend to appear almost hagiographic, Stebbins' portrayal of his subject comes with no sugar coating, this effect being helped by Marks' total honesty in providing source material and a candour that is breathtaking and admirable. As ever with Jon Stebbins writing, a deep emotional core and attachment is apparent - his feel and empathy for his subjects are always a vital asset whilst never losing the necessary journalistic impartiality that is key to such a project. Definitely one for Beach Boys fans but also anyone interested in a slice of American music history, this book comes with an unreserved recommendation.
