Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 3 Stars
The author has copied and alphabetized almost every personal and place name in the stories he surveys, but shows little specialized knowledge of the type to be expected in a reference work. For example, the article "Cthulhu" does not mention Lovecraft's own guidance on its pronunciation:
"The actual sound--as nearly as human organs could imitate it or human letters record it--may be taken as something like Khl?l'-hloo, with the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, since the h represents the guttural thickness. The second syllable is not very well rendered--the l sound being unrepresented." (to Duane Rimel, 23 July 1934) "The best approximation one can make is to grunt, bark, or cough the imperfectly-formed syllables Cluh-Luh with the tip of the tongue firmly affixed to the roof of the mouth." (to Willis Conover, 29 August 1936)
The book is also marred by misinformation. For example, the article "Atys" says that the poet Catullus (84-54 BC) was a contemporary of Caesar Augustus (63 BC-14 AD). "Every schoolboy" knows the poet was a contemporary of Julius Caesar (100-44 BC), whom he satirized.
