Book Reviews of The Lovely Bones: A NovelBook Review: A Guy's point of view Summary: 5 StarsI normally do not read this style of book, I stay with books like The Price of Immortality and WOT series but my wife had bought it and insisted that I read it. This is a story of a murdered teenage girl and her observations of what happens with her family on earth after her murder tell the story. It's incredibly moving, don't tell anyone but I found myself tearing up often throughout the book. This is one of those books that stays with you long after you have finished reading it, but in a good way, not in a sad one. It also made me laugh, strange as that may sound. All the characters are very real, and you begin to love them as Susie does. I'm highly impressed by Alice Sebold's storytelling, and I look forward to reading anything else she may write. A different kind of story but very very good is The Price of Immortality. I highly recommend it!
Book Review: A loving and touching story Summary: 5 StarsThe Lovely Bones is narrated by Susie, a fourteen year old girl who has been murdered. From heaven, she describes her attack and her family and friends' attempts at dealing with her loss in such a simple, matter-of-fact way that the reader will surely melt into puddles of tears.Plucky and wise Susie describes her heaven as the high school she never got to attend: It has a good playground and chocolate cake, you only have to go inside for art class, and everyone's nice to you. (There are no religious references in her heaven.) She watches over and visits her family and friends on earth often over the next ten years, as her life and death continue to affect them. The author's writing style is friendly, chatty and irresistible; I couldn't put it down until I was finished. It is a very quick read - the kind of book you wish wouldn't end. I loved the first half and cried through it, liked the second half, and understood the ending (but selfishly wish it could have been different). This is a book about a dead child, but it is not macabre; it is warm, loving, honest, and hopeful. Those who have lost a loved one may well find comfort by reading The Lovely Bones. I recommend it to those who enjoy insightful, well-written fiction.
Book Review: Too much hype? Summary: 3 StarsAfter reading loads about this book in the press I decided that I should give the 'must-read' book of 2003 a go. Maybe it was all the hype, but I felt let down. The book is written in a typical 'american' style and I found myself struggling to identify or bond with any of the characters. Its a great idea for a book and it were a little more hard hitting, although not gory or graphic, I'm sure that I would have enjoyed it more.
Book Review: Life after death Summary: 5 StarsProfound piece of writing which questions the intangable connection between the living and the dead. Beautifully written and deaply touching this book describes not only the journey of the soul but the everlasting affect that a persons life has on those individuals who are left behind.
Book Review: cant get into it! Summary: 2 Starsim sorry i cannot understand all the excitement of this book. admittedly the concept is there "a girl talking from heaven" but there is little story to it, no character development and not even gripping chapters or plots. sorry, im sure there is more to this book than meets the eye but i had little success in finding it!
