Book Reviews of The Lovely Bones: A NovelBook Review: Good Holiday Read ! Summary: 4 StarsI read this book in near on one sitting, thats its beauty. Once you start you really can't put it down. So its abit americanised, so what... Its a lovely story told from the point of view of a dead girl. Its easy reading and comforting for those thinking about life after death. Wouldn't we all like to think that those nearest and dearest to us that have passed over are looking down on us with a smile, haven't you ever wondered what heaven is like? Well read this book, it left me feeling happy and even my oh so cynical partner couldn't help but feel good. Its a simple book and a pleasure to read!
Book Review: The Lovely Bones Summary: 1 StarsI was personally hugely disappointed with this book and cannot understand the hype which surrounds it. I didn't find it moving and beautiful but just sad, depressing and boring. The whole book centres around a family grieving over the death of a 14 year old girl and not much else. As I read it, I was expecting something to happen, but it didn't. Each chapter does not reveal anything new apart from her family growing up. It certaintly didn't put me in a good mood after a hard day at work so if you fancy a book that makes you feel good, dont buy this! To quote a sentence: 'Mr Harvey took the waxy orange sack of my remains to a sinkhole eight miles from our neighbourhood'. Enough said.Whether you like this book depends on personal taste but if its excitement and a feel good story your after, you may find this disappointing.
Book Review: cant get into it! Summary: 2 Starsim sorry i cannot understand all the excitement of this book. admittedly the concept is there "a girl talking from heaven" but there is little story to it, no character development and not even gripping chapters or plots. sorry, im sure there is more to this book than meets the eye but i had little success in finding it!
Book Review: Disturbing at first but a beautifully written book Summary: 5 StarsThe first chapter was a little hard to stomach as it describes the gruesome murder of a child and even harder as it describes it from her point of view. However, once you get passed that chapter and she describes her "life" in heaven, looking down on the living and watching her family and her murderer in the aftermath of her death and how they cope, it is perhaps an almost fairty tale like point of view but still it can't help but be of some comfort to anyone suffering the loss of a loved one.
Book Review: what a waste of a good concept Summary: 1 StarsIt's such a great concept, and the excellent opening really draws you in. So that it's about 50 pages before you realise that this is no more than a bland, sentimental tale of middle class American life. OK, it's told from an unusual angle, but where's the character development, the relation of the murderer to the society he lives in (or not)? There isn't even a little idea here, let alone a big one. And when Susie gets to heaven, from where she can see the whole world, the whole universe, all she looks at is the little world in which she grew up. The murderer's end is a complete cop out, doesn't fit in with the rest of the plot. There are no themes, no ideas. It's very limited book. Still, the writing is nice, and I bet Alice Sebold writes something really good one day. When she's grown up.
