Book Reviews of The Lovely Bones: A Novel

Book Review: Worth Reading
Summary: 4 Stars

I have recently read this book. It is not the type of book I would normally read but I admit the picture on the front and the description on the back lured me in and I was not disappointed! The Lovely Bones tells the story of Susie a teenage girl murdered in a field behind her school. The story tells of her family and their subsequent lives without her, whilst still living and her continuance of 'life' in heaven without them. There are absolute gems in this book, for example when the family dog joins her which brought a tear to my eye. At the end of the book I was sad to have finished reading it as I was enjoying it so much. I think if I had had a death in my family I would of felt intense relief reading this book and have recommended it to a friend whose sister tragically died aged 3 (35 yrs ago). I hope she will enjoy the idea that she may be watching from somewhere else.

Book Review: Note - Not alot to do with bones!
Summary: 4 Stars

Never, Never! ..look down the street at your neighbours the same way again after reading this! It's a well written book which I was suprised to find very entertaining. The story tells us whats happening down on earth from the eyes of a 14 year old girl, one of whose former neighbours decided to murder her. If you can cope with the very morbid content the better (and incidentally more lengthy) parts will pull you through. I say give it a go, there's always a chance the writer has been there and back and is telling us a few things? Spooky!

Book Review: Superb!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Lovely Bones is written from the perspective of a fourteen-year-old girl, Susie, who has been violently murdered.

Susie finds herself in heaven watching her family and friends attempt to come to terms with her death, and trying to bring together the shattered pieces of their lives over the years. Susie herself also has to learn to let go of her past life on Earth before she can progress to the next stage of her afterlife.

The book movingly depicts how each of her family members deals with their grief in a different way as their lives carry on without her. Susie meanwhile watches proceedings from afar, sharing her family member's joy and sadness.

The book is unputdownable. I read it in a single day in which all other tasks were put aside until I got to the end and finally found out what happened. I suspect I will remember this book for quite some while.

Book Review: Must read!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book breaks your heart but slowly puts it back together.

Book Review: Over-Rated and Over-Here
Summary: 1 Stars

Don't waste your money on this book. 5 million Americans might have bought it, but...well, they're American. This book is a dull and turgid read - spend your money on an Anne Tyler you haven't read before instead.

I'm sure the only reason it's on the bestseller list in this country is that it's on a 3-for-2 offer at Waterstone's (just because a book's been sold doesn't mean it's been enjoyed!).
