Book Reviews of The Lovely BonesBook Review: A different type of story Summary: 3 Stars
After hearing so much about this book, I decided to read it. The writing was good, the characters were decent, but I couldn't get past the fact that the book involved a gruesome murder. I usually read books to escape from the world. This book is just too real, so I guess the writer did a good job. I was just really sad and depressed as I read the book.
Book Review: A disturbing novel that can never be forgotten.... Summary: 4 Stars
I just finished reading the book and a part of me wishes that I didn't. It's a great book and it was written well. I was looking for another book to read and a friend suggested this to me. I took up the advice and did some reasearch, I found it at the library and I brought it home. I started reading it.
I couldn't put the book down it and that's not in a good way. I started reading the novel and right away the protagonist, Susie Salmon starts to explain her life, she then explains how she was brutally raped and eventually murdered by her deranged neighbor Mr.Harvey. It was so disturbing how she described her death, as I was reading the description my heart sank. It was so cruel, how could a man do that to a young teenager? As she was describing the event, it was so vivid I felt as though I was there watching it happen, but I couldn't do anything about it.
Eventually her mother who was a few hundred feet away started looking for her and as her mother yelled her name, that was when Susie Salmon was killed. FLASHING FOREWORD to the future, she is in heaven, and she is missing out on being a human on earth. Throughout the story she watches the lives of her parents, siblings, love interest, friends, and her killer's unfold, ever since the dissapearence of her. Her parents won't give up hope that their daughter is gone forever, this event sabatoges their relationship as a husband and wife, they break up. She also experiences a lot of emotions, several distinct events occur both on heaven and on earth. The end of the book leaves you speechless. It's a great book, but nobody should read it if they don't like sad stories. If you are looking for a happy story with a happy ending look elsewhere and stay away from this book. But if you are looking for a good book, and don't care about how sad it is, then you should read this. But it's definitly recommended for older teens-adult.
Book Review: A good book about a hard subject Summary: 4 Stars
"The Lovely Bones" deals with the difficult subject of child rape and murder, but Sebold crafts wonderful characters and her description of typical 1970s suburbia is spot-on. The story's narrator is fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon, who is raped and murdered by neighbor George Harvey (whom Sebold gives a background as well, but it feels overdone and largely meaningless). Her death sends her family into a tailspin; her mother eventually leaves and her father suffers health problems. Her sister, Lindsey, takes it upon herself to help the police investigate her sister's death long after it's become a cold case. Susie's school friends are also altered by her death: Ray Singh, her first crush, becomes involved with artist Ruth, who also senses that the dead aren't so far away after they leave the earth. Sebold's description of personal heavens where Susie lives are beautiful and sad. This is a book that lives up to its hype.
Book Review: A good book with weak ending Summary: 3 Stars
I became interested in this book after I saw the trailer for the forthcoming movie. I knew that it was kind of a "chick" book going in, but I was interested in it anyway. The first 200 or so pages are excellent but then it goes off the deep end a little, then alot. The book presents a nice way to look at heaven and was enjoyable to read, but the ending spoiled it for me.
Book Review: A good read Summary: 4 Stars
This was a good read with such an interesting perspective. I enjoyed it and read it quickly. It had me interested by the end of the first page. Characters were interesting and storyline was good. An excellent summer read.
