Book Reviews of The Lovely BonesBook Review: Keep Kleenex nearby: An enthralling, sad, & yet hopeful story Summary: 5 Stars
What a great read! The array of characters was so life-like and believable, even the dead Susie Salmon, that I feel like I could recognize them in real-life. The major characters were given enough individual spotlight treatment throughout the story, which did not bog down the pacing. Mr. Harvey, the murderer, is not just a flat, evil presence. One gets to know enough about him also.
Try as I may not to cry, the waters flowed out of my eyes. The subject matter is not for the faint-hearted, but Sebold does not exploit the gruesome details. Her writing is tender and simple, as she gives voice to the teenaged Susie.
For Susie, arrested in development at 14 years horribly and unfairly by the sadistic Mr. Harvey, her version of heaven entails friendship with a girl her age and with a mother figure. Sebold takes amazing risks in her vision of Susie's afterlife, especially at the near end of the story. But the author's writing is so effortless and unpretentious that I just go along with it all in stride. Highest recommendations.
Book Review: LOVED IT!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorites. I could not put it down. IF you like The Lovely Bones, you may also want to read Lucky; another great book by Alice Sebold.
Book Review: Leaves you emotionally raw, but for shock value Summary: 3 Stars
Agonizing book about a girl who is brutally raped and murdered in the first few pages. The story is told from her looking down from heaven as she tells how her family is coping with her death. I don't want to read about fourteen year old girls getting murdered. Geez, I can watch the evening news if that is the kind of story I want to be investing time into.
I also felt some of the character's weren't true to themselves, and the out of body experiences that occurs three fourths of the way through is bizarre and unrealistic. I love being touched by a book, but this one I felt went to shock value emotion rather than letting you get to know the characters and feeling for them when something happens.
Book Review: Lovely Bones Summary: 5 Stars
Lovely Bones is about a girl named Susie Salmon who is raped and killed y her families next door neighbor Gorge Harvey. As Susie is in her heaven she watches over her family, friends and Mr. Harvey. While Susie looks down on her family and friends so many things go wrong because of her death and she cant do anything about it.
My favorite part of this book is when Susie takes over her friend Ruth's body. She does this accedentily and spends times with her school crush Ray Sighn. Ray is afraid at first but after a while hes okay with it and likes being with Susie again.
I highly recommend this book this book because it is so exciting. I couldn't put this book down even though it took me a while to read it. i liked this book partly because at one point you'll be reading whats happening up in heaven and then you'll see whats happening back on Earth. you will also be able to see what happens with Mr. Harvey and how his life ends up.
Book Review: Lovely Bones Summary: 4 Stars
Alice Sebold is telling the story of a girl who gets raped and dies. She tells the story from heaven. In the book Lovely Bones she tries to tell readers that you never know what can happen on any day. You have to live your life to the fullest everyday because you don't know what's going to happen today or tomorrow. Sebold is also the author of Lucky and The Almost Moon along with Lovely Bones. She lives in California with her husband, the novelist Glen David Cole. She also won the Bram Stoker award in 2003 for The Lovely Bones. The book Lovely Bones makes a very good point and is a very interesting and can't put the book down type of read. Sebold does a pretty good job in getting the point across and accomplishes her goal. Especially in the middle of the book she talks about how Susie's sister, Susie is the narrator, misses Susie and wishes she could have done more things with Susie. Also, her dad and mom say the same thing. When her grandmother comes to stay with them she helps out the family stay in order and stay together so they don't fall apart. The grandmother didn't live in the same state so she didn't get to see Susie a lot, and misses her very much. The book has many strengths in telling the story. Sebold gets the point across well in a way that's not boring and that she will get the reader's attention. Lovely Bones is a good book and hard to put down.
