Book Reviews of The Lovely BonesBook Review: An amazing book. Summary: 5 Stars
While struggling with my own issues surrounding God and heaven and whether or not there is an afterlife, I stumbled onto this incredible book. I had purchased Ms. sebold's other book, an autobiography about her own rape and how "Lucky" she was to be alive, at a library book sale. I read "The Lovely Bones" in one day. It is so much more than a book about rape. It is inspiring. Please read this book, it may change your attitude about death and heaven and most of all, life.
Book Review: Another Lifetime Special turned novel Summary: 1 Stars
I'm not going to repeat much of what has been said already. In short the writing of this book seemed forced. The premise, much like the rape in the novel "Kite Runner" really was just another shock value device in order to give the author an opportunity to ramble on about, quite frankly, a not very interesting childhood.
Book Review: Average Summary: 3 Stars
This book got a lot of undeserving hype. Some parts of the book were very magical, where as other parts were unnecessary, and ridiculous. This book is written in a way that I do not envision heaven. Maybe that is why I only liked the book, and would not call it a must read.
Book Review: Beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
This is among the top 5 most beautiful and well written books I've ever read. I cant believe it's taken me this long to read this! I sucked this book down in 24 hours of non stop emotional roller coaster enjoyment... I cant say enough good things about this book. It is a must read.
Book Review: Beautiful writing - great surprise Summary: 5 Stars
In hindsight, I realized that this was a popular book, especially with the book club circuit. At the time that I read it, I knew nothing about it except for the editorial synopsis, and am glad I hadn't heard any of the hype. For me, at least, it changes the reading experience to know too much ahead of time (including "public opinion"). Given the subject matter & the description, I wouldn't have picked this to read, but a group of fellow readers wanted to read it, and I just went along for the ride.
The Lovely Bones was one of those rare surprises - a book I wouldn't have picked, but happened to read anyway, and thoroughly enjoyed. Sebold is a beautiful writer. I'm not talking about the subject or the story, just about the way she writes. At times, her descriptions are poetry. I read it a second time just to concentrate on her style. It's beautiful.
That said, the story was also interesting, funny and sad (achingly so). So many interesting and believable characters. I know I'll re-read it again eventually.
P.S. For an additional treat, if the opportunity presents itself, check out the audio version narrated by Alyssa Bresnahan - you'll swear you are listening to Susie herself...
