Book Reviews of The Lovely BonesBook Review: Interesting but confusing Summary: 2 Stars
The writing was exceptional, but some of the characters just were not believable nor does one ever get to really know them. I found the messages about them confusing, ie: the mother Abigail leaves the family, the children who are left resent her, then a grandchild is named after her?!? What? Weird stuff.
Where the victim hovers and watches the people she loves was very touching, but when she "tumbles toward earth" and inhabits the body of a friend....c'mon.... Such a good book then BAM, the author throws in the body switcheroo, among other things...well, it ruined the book for me.
It's a good crime novel, but again, the crime gets no closure.
It seems only to be the story of unrequited teenage love. Very strange when the crime was so horrendous. Also, I can see young characters reacting to her murder in the way they did....but not the adults. The father seemed to be the only stable adult whose grief was real.
It's a good read, just don't expect the end to be the same. Have to give it a 2.
Book Review: Interesting premise, dissapointing novel. Summary: 3 Stars
Hokey and cheesy --- especially the anti-climactic ending. Over-hyped book equivalent to sappy romance novels without the romance. Better options out there.
Book Review: It Will Make You Stronger Summary: 5 Stars
I read this novel and was really immersed in the emotional landscape of the Salmon family. I felt like by the end of the book I had gotten to know all of them, and their pain and loss, so well. This book hurts, but by the end it heals you.
Book Review: It was ok, good at parts, painfully dull in others Summary: 3 Stars
This book didn't even come close to wowing me, however much I expected it too. I was expecting something along the lines of The Kite Runner or Life of Pi, an relatively new book that I would enjoy.
The premise was very good, but the plot lines just sucked horribly. Half formed plots that you get the idea that the author thought about developing but then just went nah. This book flits from here to there with no real feeling of going anywhere, and you know that's not a completely horrible thing, it fits in with the idea of the book, the theme being mostly about life, but still, things happen, and you expect other things to happen related to that, but they never do. The climax of the book comes when Susie gets laid, really, that's it, just thought I'd add that.
The shining part of the book was the occasional times it could make you feel empathy for the characters, and often times it was strong, it's the only reason this doesn't get a 1 from me, but I guess that's ok, again, the book wasn't meant to be big on plot I don't think, but a little structure would of been nice.
Book Review: Its an amazing book. Can't wait til they make the movie. Summary: 4 Stars
With controversy over the new movie adaptation coming out fairly soon, The Lovely Bones has been receiving much attention. Much criticism has surfaced over why anyone would want to manifest onto film the story of young girl's tragic rape and murder. I can assure you, rape doesn't even begin to touch the surface of the message this book portrays. As it narrates the healing process of Susie's family after her rape and murder, one can feel a sense of humanity. This book truly shows how remarkable a human being's ability to cope and move on after such devastating events can be. The characters are very real and very emotional. One can find themselves becoming engulfed in these literary beings. You feel their pain and frustration. Apart of you begins to understand their thoughts and fears. It's easy to get immersed in the story line of this book. It is a stimulating read and it gives such tragedies as rape and murder and it's effects on people an identity. Sure, we read about these events in the Newspaper and we feel sympathy but sometimes that is not enough. Sometimes we need to allow ourselves to be a little more uncomfortable in order to better understand what is happening around us. This book takes the bold headline that graces the covers of daily newspapers and magnifies it. It takes the reader deeper into the lives of those names you read about but soon forgot.
