Book Review: An Experience
Summary: 4 Stars

This isn't a book, it's an experience. It takes every parent's worst nightmare and rather than expound on the horror, it's offers a sense of peace, a glimmer of hope. In this extraordinary story we follow Susie Salmon as she watches over her earthly family.

Susie was lured and murdered at age 14. The book could be morbid and sad, but it really wasn't. Neither is it childish or sappy. It offers an idea of what heaven might be like and goes even a little further in getting the reader to think. There is little anger in Susie's story, rather just a passive watchfulness as her younger sister grows up, falls in love, her parents drift apart, her little brother learns the truth and her killer moves on. It isn't until the dramatic ending that Susie takes a more active part.

The things this book made me think about was not so much Susie's version of heaven, but of the watching over phenomenon. I'm sure we've all imagined it at one time or another. Wondering if our grandparents or parents are watching over us. Susie shows what that would be like long term. Does it ever get old...watching the day to day activities here on earth?

Book Review: An unexpected pleasure
Summary: 4 Stars

When my sister handed me a copy of this book and told me I just had to read it, I have to admit I was very skeptical. She and I have different tastes in books and movies. I brought the book home with me and left it on my desk as I was already in the middle of another book.

A few days later, I finished my book and picked up The Lovely Bones to see what it was about. Heaven. This is a topic I almost always avoid. I opened the book to the first page, and was gently ushered into the story by the narrator, Susie Salmon. This tone protects the reader from the chilling events that set the novel in motion. In spite of the fact that the narrator is young, she is calm and kind and we begin to care about her and her family immediately.

A book based on the premise of a young girl in heaven looking down on life and her loved ones has so much potential to be trite, melodramatic, and religious. This book, fortunately, is none of those things. It is an interesting story from a new type of perspective. I enjoyed this book.

Book Review: Beautifully Written!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book reads as a thriller/mystery but has so much to say about life and death. One of the best books I have ever read. Beautifully written. At times, very touching, funny. As I was reading this book, I thought, what a talent this writer has. Parts of it almost made me cry and I don't cry easily. I couldn't put it down and was so disappointed when it ended. I look forward to seeing more works from this author.

Book Review: Book Report
Summary: 4 Stars

I am in comm. arts class right now and we have to write a book review by writing down our book reports. So, here it goes. Susie Salmon is a fourteen year old girl. She was walking home from school one day through the cornfield when she meets her next door neighbor, Mr. Harvey. He dug a hole in the cornfield and built a tiny room in it. He tells her to come inside and look, but when she does he murders her. He fills in the hole and gets rid of all the evidence except an elbow that another neighbor's dog finds. The elbow is identified as Susie's and her family (Mom-Abigal, dad-Jack, sister-Lindsay, brother-Buckley) are devastated. A girl named Ruth was at the soccer field near the cornfield when Susie died and she is sure that Susie's soul passed through her body when it was flying to Heaven. She becomes obsessed with Susie and her death. She becomes friends with Ray, who had a crush on Susie. Susie is in Heaven and she watches everyone carry on with their lives. She wishes she was still alive because she misses everyone. Her dad suspects that Mr. Harvey murdered her, but the police won't listen to him because he has no solid proof. To find out what happens next you will have to read the book because even though I revealed the end in my book report, I'm not going to spoil it for you people. And I'm sorry that my book report is badly written, but what can ya do? I have to do this to get a good grade. I would reccommend this book, it's very well written and the story is very unique. It is truly a must read. <3 Michelle, 8th Grade

Book Review: Depressing
Summary: 1 Stars

Somehow I felt that if the subject matter was going to be so horrible, then we must expect to be uplifted and guided as we read this child's story from heaven. Not so. She never seems happy in heaven, nor do the other souls around her. She doesn't even seem content. Chapter after chapter one keeps expecting something....anything to give this childs life worth. To give the book some worth. Never happens. Very disappointed.
