Book Review: Better Title - "The (ELCA) Lutheran Handbook II"
Summary: 3 Stars
I have very much enjoyed previous offerings in this "handbook" series. I can't say the same for this book. If you are not an ELCA Lutheran (perhaps, even if you are), you will find a number of topics/statements objectionable. First, editorial statements on the ordination of women framed in a way that portrays Lutheran communities which do not ordain women as sexist. Second, listings of Lutheran colleges and seminaries and a graphic depicting Lutheran congregations are not accurate representations of Lutheran communities, but of ELCA (and its Canadian counterpart - ELCIC). Third, there is a subtle, but definite bias against white (conservative) males. I knew beforehand that the book was published by "Augsburg Fortress" (the publishing house of the ELCA), so the editorial slant did not come as a surprise. But I do take exception to the title - the book claims to represent (North) American Lutheranism - it doesn't (and considering what is happening within the ELCA these days, it might not represent a large percentage of the ELCA either). In the end, enjoyable, but not as enjoyable as previous offerings (even after factoring out the previous caveats).
