Book Reviews of The Magic Tree House: Books 1-8 (Magic Tree House)

Book Review: GREAT FOR READ ALONG - BOOKS ARE PURCHASED SEPARATE :)
Summary: 4 Stars

These are the first ever audio books that I have ever purchased. I asked a friend who has 2 young boys, which were their favorite children's books, because I was trying to start up a collection. She recommended a few but also told me about another book called "The Read-Aloud Handbook" by Jim Trelease. I was turned off by the title but wanted her to feel like I appreciated her advice lol, so I purchased it and started reading! I was STUNNED! I absolutely loved it! I would highly recommend it to any parent or teacher of any sort. The first half of the book talks about all the different research that has been done, that shows you the profound effect that reading to a child has on their lives. The second half shares some of the best children's books ever written. Now you might be thinking, what does this have to do with The Magic Tree House Books? lol. Well....

The Read Aloud Handbook is where I got the idea to start having my kids listen to audio books in the evening, as they're going to sleep, instead of watching a movie or tv. The set that I was referred to, was several hundred dollars. I was blown away. I instantly started trying to find something less expensive. This is when I found the Magic Tree House audio books. When I first listened to it with my little boy, I was surprised. I had never listened to an audio book and I don't know what I was expecting but not this. It was literally like someone reading a book. lol. I think I was expecting sound effects. I didn't realize that it would be someone saying "let's go. He said. What about this? She said." lol Now, that said! Once I got used to the format of it, I did get interested and my son loves them! So they are a hit! Because it is literally like someone is reading the book word for word, this is why I think it is great for reading along with the actual book in front of you. Perfect for young readers. My son follows every word and it helps him connect the words on the page to the way they sound. The woman who narrates, does do very distinct voices for each character which is wonderful. I think I would love an audio book set even more if it had sound effects. I will have to continue my search! :) But in the meantime, these work! :) I have one happy boy at home.

Book Review: My 6 year old's opinion
Summary: 5 Stars

Me: How do you like these stories, sweetie?
Son: I love them, Mama! That woman is a wonderful reader. Is she real?
Me: Yes.
Son: Are there more stories like this, Mama?
Me: Yes, and Mama will buy you more if you are good.
Son: OK, I'll be good, Mama!

Book Review: Doesn't Come With Books
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this cd set for my son who is seven and loves this series. However, we have been going to the library lately and checking out the books that you can read along with. I thought that this series was that type but unfortunantely it wasn't. I did give it three stars though because my son still listens to them when he goes to bed and does like the stories. But, am very dissappointed that I am now going to have to go out and buy all the books so he can follow along. I bought these mainly to help in his reading skills and it has turned out to be more like a listening skill instead. Oh Well. The cd's are great but just wanted to warn future shoppers that it does NOT come with the books, you have to buy those seperately.

Book Review: The best!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This CD series absolutely captivated my 4-year-old (who doesn't have the patience to sit through most TV programs, not that I'm complaining!). She would have sat and listened to the whole entire 5 CD set in one sitting if we would have let her. Osborne's adventures are laced with historical facts and are a great choice if you're planning on going for long car rides. The only drawback was that the stories tend to be a little intense in spots--I would say if your child is very sensitive, you may need to take the time to explain some story details and monitor their reaction.

Book Review: Captivated my 3.5 yr old son and almost 7 yr old daughter
Summary: 5 Stars

My seven year old daughter received the set of CDs (books one through eight) for Christmas. She listened to books one, two, and four non-stop, in one morning. Now, two days later, she's listened to them all, some twice.

I had the first book on hand, and she followed along page by page. Later that day I went to the library and got as many of the rest of the eight that I could, and she drank them up! It was great to watch her "reading along", and I'm sure it will help her feel more confident as she begins to read chapter books.

What really amazed me though, is that my 3 and a half year old son listened as well. Though he sometimes played while he listened, he was obviously caught up in the excitement of pirates, knights, dinosaurs, and the rest.

I found the books easy to listen to, and interesting enough. The author does a great job of using her voice to distinguish whose talking. I am amazed at how well the stories kept my kids' attention for hours at a time! And introduced them to some history as well, no less.

One thing to note though, our "disc two" is labelled as though it were disc three, and vice versa. A little confusing, but we figured it out. (5 discs in all).
