Book Review: this funny fantasy adventure makes a great family read-aloud

E. Nesbit's classic The Magic City will have your whole family rolling on the floor with laughter. Adults and kids will enjoy this story of a boy in Edwardian England who builds a city out of various household objects. Hilarious adventures ensue when the city magically becomes real. The boy and his friend encounter lots of wonderful Nesbitesque characters including the pineapple-craving Great Sloth and the wicked Pretenderette, mysteriously swathed in a motor veil, who turns out to actually be. . .but that would be telling. I first read this aloud to my children at ages 4 and 6 and they loved it although the reading level is considerably higher. . .probably about 5th grade or so. They still enjoy reenacting the story as they build their own "magic cities." This book is the basis for the book Knights Castle by the American author Edward Eager. He often refers to E. Nesbit's books in his 7 wonderful children's fantasies. Read The Magic City and get your family started on hours of reading enjoyment with both Nesbit's and Eager's books. Amazon carries many of the titles but be sure to check your library for a number of Nesbit titles that are still out of print.
