Lev Grossman is a magician. He's pulled a strange, dark, fantastical story out of his shiny noggin while the rest of us were staring slack-jawed at another "CSI" rerun. (As fans know, Grossman is a full-time senior writer and book reviewer for TIME magazine, a blogger [...], and a daddy to a lovely little girl.) From the very first line of the novel -- "Quentin did a magic trick. Nobody noticed." -- the reader is swept into a weird and mystical world in which nothing is as it seems. "The Magicians" is handily the smartest and best book I've read all year.
