Book Reviews of The Measure of a Man : A Spiritual AutobiographyBook Review: Interesting but Not Captivating Summary: 2 StarsI chose this book because I like Sidney Poitier from what I've seen in his movies and thought it would be interesting to find out more about him. This book tells his life story which I found to be interesting. I especially enjoyed reading about his acting career and his views about the movies he did. The best advice I took from the book was his motto for trying new things: "Prepare for the worst and hope for the best."
Throughout the book he included themes about principles his father taught him and dealing with race discrimination. The title comes from a nugget his father told him: "The measure of a Man is how he provides for his family." In addition to his career, Sidney Poitier spends much of the book sharing about his childhood and his family relationships. These give the reader some insight to what kind of person he is.
Because it was a New York Times Bestseller and one of Oprah's book club books, I expected it to be very good. I was disappointed. The writing itself was on the rambling side and choppy. I found myself really having to plow through this book. Near the end, when he got philosophical, I must admit I even skipped some of it. I was relieved when I was done so I could start something else.

Book Review: Interesting read Summary: 4 StarsI am almost finished with this book and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not that the writing is brilliant or his insights exceptionally original; but I appreciate reading the story of a man who has accomplished a lot and been a role model for many. I'm also impressed by his experiences and perspectives as an African American throughout the 20th century. I have a hard time imagining I would have handled such a life as nobly as he has.
Book Review: disappointing Summary: 1 StarsI actually bought three copies of this book. The book wasn't holding my interest from the start. I never put a good book down. It was also strange that Mr. Poitier felt the need to use so much foul language. Although I admire Mr. Poitier so much, I couldn't seem to get what the purpose of the book was about. This is only my opinion. He is more than obviously a phenomenal actor. I have always had an extremely high opinion of him. For me, I just didn't gel with this book.
And I feel sorry that I sent the book to others as a gift, without reading it first.
Book Review: one of my all time favorites Summary: 5 Starsif you enjoy sidney poitier's work, or if you enjoy reading a great book then this is a must read.
Book Review: Very Good Summary: 5 StarsI'd heard a lot about this book and curiousity made me purchase it. I was not disapointed. S.P. has always been a respected man in the african-american community. I don't usually follow critics or book club recommendations but Oprah was right on this time. I think this book really defines his position and his character.
Very good reading
