Book Review: 2 1/2 Stars...Graham Greene? Hardly!

After a recent trip to Israel, I was intrigued by Davidson's "The Menorah Men." I picked up a copy at a used book store and dove into this treasure hunt with zeal. Davidson does create believable characters, and he paints scenes with relative easy, capturing brilliantly some of the places I visited.
Dr. Liang is called in to help search for a fabled Menorah with symbolic significance and potential monetary wealth. As he traverses Israel, he provides snippets about the land and the people that I found enjoyable. By the end, he has been on a wild goose chase that climaxes in a great scene in the cliffs near Ein Gedi.
This is not, however, anything near to a Graham Greene story, as one reviewer suggested. Mr. Liang has no moral compunction or struggle, in the Greene manner; in fact, he's more than willing to compromise the values of a susceptible young woman, who is engaged to a man in the Israeli Army. It's also not a Robert Ludlum or Dan Brown novel, lacking the pacing or plot for such. It is, quite simply, a well-written, but somewhat ambling and unfocused novel. The "love" story, for example, has no purpose in regards to the plot.
I'm glad I read the book, for its Holy Land ambiance. It's a quick read. Other than that, it fell far short of my love of British authors such as John LeCarre, Graham Greene, Colin Forbes, Alistair MacLean, and so on.
