Book Review: The first time a book moistured my eyes!!
Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this book assuming it will be in the usual William Gibson style (Neuromancer, Idoru, and so on).First surprise, it is a piece for theater and second surprise, the play takes place around 1900.
This is a deeply moving story about Anne Sullivan trying to teach Helen Keller (blind, deaf and mute) what words are about. She is at first confronted with a kid rather a wild beast than a human being and furthermore the kid, now 6 years of age, is allowed to do nearly everything -> so the first goal is to teach the kid obedience.
But the much more challenging difficulty is to make the kid understand that each thing has a name and these names are the only possibility for the kid to establish a communication channel out of its isolation.
I have to see the piece in a theater, it is so moving, so touching...you can feel the isolation and desperation of the kid, you can follow how the kid tries to extend the borders of the permitted actions and you can live the frustration and in the end the succes of the kids teacher.
Nice to see how William Gibson can switch from pure entertainment novels to social-political theater.
