Book Review: A Trip to Rural Tuscany
Summary: 5 Stars
This book was recommended to me by a salesperson at Borders. I was told that I would absolutely love it and it is a very charming book. Santo Fico is a rural, out of the way, town in Tuscany. The town is very isolated and the families have been there for centuries. Leo is the "prodigal son" who returns to Santo Fico after years of being in America, with the intent of selling his parents' farm. The townspeople seem to shun him, possibly due to the circumstances of his departure. There are an old man, Nonno, and his skinny gray dog that seem to be the only friendly faces to Leo in Santo Fico. He is faced with his childhood friends, Topo (aka Guido)and Marta, his lost love (Little does he know that he was her first love). Marta married another friend Franco, who we later find married her because he knew Leo loved her and she owned a hotel and restaurant. Franco gave Marta 2 daughters before getting himself killed on a motorcycle with his long-time mistress. Marta's eldest daughter Carmen is beautiful and rebellious, angry at her mother. The younger daughter Nina is blind and angelic. Marta's uncle is the village priest. Miracles do happen in this book. I will emphasize again that it is charming as well as well-written. There is a guide in the back for reading groups also.
