Book Review: Miss Firecracker Contest

"The Miss Firecracker Contest" by Beth Henley is a truly excellent play. It follows Carnelle Scott, who is 24 and is entering the "Contest". It is essentially just a beauty pageant on July 4th of every year. Elain Rutledge, who is Carnelle's cousin, won it years ago and now Carnelle is looking to win it to prove something to the townsfolk (She used to sleep around with a lot of men, earning the nickname "Hot Tamale", and even got syphilis once). Delmount Willaims, Elain's brother, had not been heard from in a while, but returns to sell the house and all the furniture, and is strongly against Carnelle entering the contest. Popeye Jackson is Carnelle's newly acquired friend and seamstress for the pageant, and Popeye develops a crush on Delmount. I don't want to go to much farther, but this is a rare show where 6 oddball characters blend well, and its a dark comedy with a lot of heart in it. I highly recommend it.
