Book Review: Nice idea - shame about the content

So does this render the book pretty useless as a diagnostic tool? Yes. It means that you should use it as a learning tool rather than a substitute for a qualified and experienced nutritionist. But Julia Ross claims that if you have symptoms of a "Blah" mood then you only have to take the recommended pills (vitamins, minerals etc) and your problem will be over. I don't believe that this is entirely safe particularly when taking drugs like Melatonin!

The books format includes 13 chapters of which several contain questionnaires whose purpose is to identify specific symptoms and thereby possible causes. A wise Doctor friend of mine "There are comparatively few symptoms for myriads of causes". There are no diagrams or pictures, the cross referencing (often mis-referenced with incorrect page numbers) indicated poor editing e.g. Pyroluria is mentioned on page 49 as being covered on page 303 in the "Resource Tool Kit" which is on page 301-302). So, the book is irritating and rather dry to read? I'm afraid it is.

The concept of the book is a wonderful opportunity and there are still considerable benefits to be obtained by careful examination and extraction of the facts and theories. The recipes, guides and connections are a fascinating insight into the author's connection between what we eat and how we feel. However, the pond-skater structure of the book is often confusing.

The UK edition was anglicised by Antony Haynes (Harley Street Nutritionist) and my impression is that he simply got bored - there are so many useful UK points of contact which have not been included. It would also have been helpful for readers to have been told that Tryptophan is not available in the UK.

The content of the book and its price make this a "good value" buy and I now await the publication of a more carefully structured and less "jumping to isolated conclusions" version.

In conclusion, use this book as a guide to your understanding but be prepared to spend over ?100 and see a qualified nutritionist (like Lorraine Peretta (01372) 470730) if you want to get properly diagnosed and treated for any imbalance in your body chemistry.
