Book Review: A Fantastic WhoDunIt by a Fantastic Writer!

This book was recommended to me about 4 years ago by a friend who knew I loved mysteries and crime novels. My reading of the classics (Dickens, Austen etc) at the time had been pretty (OK very!) sketchy, so I was a bit surprised they recommended a book written 150 years ago.
This book dispelled every notion I ever had about classics being boring, difficult and out of touch with todays world.
In the book, you are treated to several different people's perspectives over the loss, and apparent theft of one of the worlds largest diamonds - The Moonstone. I have read somewhere that this was the first detective story ever written. I have no idea whether that is true, but, to my mind it is one of the best.
All the characters are rounded (even though not all of them have been invited to 'contribute' to the book), especially so, I feel as you see all the major players through several peoples eyes.
The mystery is very good, I won't give it away at all here - I'll just say that I didn't see it coming at all!
I also love books by Patricia Cornwall, Agatha Christie, Mo Hayer. All these writers have written mysterys so good that, even though I know 'whodunit' I enjoy re-reading them all over again.
The Moonstone definatly fits into this catergory. Since I was introduced to it, I think I have read it about 6 times. And every time I have realised something new about the evidence or one of the characters.
I just can't recommend this book highly enough!
