Book Reviews of The Most Decadent Diet Ever!: The cookbook that reveals the secrets to cooking your favorites in a healthier wayBook Review: How to Boil Water Summary: 2 StarsWhile reading reviews for "Cook Yourself Thin", I ran across recommendations for this book and recognizing the author's name, thought it would be a good buy.
Glad I checked it out at the library before spending the money.
I'd seen Devin Alexander's show a few times and was looking forward to some new and interesting recipes. Instead, I found a collection of standards with common sense substitutions. Nothing new or creative, just the basics- replacing high fat ingredients with their low fat versions. Open Faced Ham and Cheese Sandwich? Use light ham, light cheese and one piece of whole grain bread. Not really a revolutionary take right? Not really worthy of a two-page entry in a cookbook either.
I did think to check out the dessert section before writing it off completely but there was nothing new there either; the most innovative recipes calling for the substitution of applesauce for some of the fat. Really? You can find these low-fat dessert revamps at any recipe/vegan recipe website.
I could see how this would be a great book for a novice cook, but if you can remember to buy the "lite" version of your standards, you don't need this book.
Book Review: Best Diet Cookbook Around Summary: 5 StarsBought this cookbook recently and found it to be one of the best diet cookbooks I have ever purchased. The recipes are simple but loaded with flavor. You never walk away from the table feeling like you are missing something, which how you feel after most "diet" recipes. Even my kids like the recipes which is huge score. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to eat healthier but not willing to give up their favorites.
Book Review: excellent cookbook!! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a very good cookbook with many delicious and low calorie foods. There are many comfort food recipes with nutritional information, which I always look for. Everything I have tried has been very good, the latest, Honey Glazed Pork Tenderloin, which everyone loved.
Book Review: Great book! Summary: 5 StarsThere isn't anything I've made from this book that my family didn't love. The brownies are too good. Some of the recipes take some work but the end result if more than worth it.
Book Review: Good eats! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a neat little cookbook. My only complaint is that I wish there were more recipes and more photos of the final dish. Still and all, a nice little work!
Up front, Devin Alexander makes clear the purpose of this book (Page vii): "{This book] is not actually a diet in the sense of a follow-it-to-the-letter-type deprivation diet. It's a diet in the sense of a 'way of eating.' It's a life style that affords you (and has afforded me) tons of freedom."
There are a number of cool features at the front end of the book--as with many cookbooks. The principles of the author's plan are presented on pages 1-14. Other basics are provided as well. But, as always, it is the recipes that are at the heart of this book. Just a few examples to illustrate. . . . There are some nice veggie dishes at the end of the book, some of which are pretty similar to dishes that I already make (although her spices and herbs would add some additional taste to my recipes). Broccoli limone. I have a similar recipe, but one that calls for serving the broccoli cold; her recipe is served hot. Either way, sounds delicious. Another broccoli dish? Oven fried broccoli with parmesan. I aim to try this one in the next couple days (fresh broccoli is already in the refrigerator).
Entrees? Spicy Szechuan Steal Salad. Looks yummy and sounds like a real treat. There is a recipe for marinara sauce that looks interesting--and different from how I make this. I am always looking for ways to fix pork tenderloin, which can be pretty bland if not cooked right. The recipe here calls for paprika, salty and pepper, onion powder, cayenne, olive oil, honey, and garlic. The rub looks like it would add some zest to the meat. The recipe is described well and looks quite doable (don't you hate cookbooks where many of the recipes are far too taxing?).
All in all, a nice addition to my kitchen library.
