Book Review: 62 Beautiful Instructional Games by Chernev
Summary: 5 Stars
As stated in another review, Chernev is one of my favorite chess authors. He brings inspiration and passion to even the dullest of games. Luckily, the ones chosen in this book are not only instructive, but many are simply great games that you'll want to go through again and again.
I see this book as a follow up to Logical Chess: Move by Move in that here Chernev assumes you know some of the basics of openings and tactical play. That doesn't mean that he doesn't explain things. Chernev often gives annotation of potential tactical shots or positional wins that were avoided or were better than the text moves. Yet Chernev never drowns you with variations, making the games extremely accessible.
The book itself is relatively small in size, making it easy to take anywhere(though you still need a board of some kind to work through them, I use a Palm Pilot). The games have the occasional mistake in analysis(remember that this was written long before the advent of Dr. Fritz), but for the most part Chernev's analysis is top notch. I have yet to find any mistakes in the printing of moves or notation though.
Some things about the book:
1) The 62 games don't appear to be in any particular order(at least from what I could tell). It seems to be a rather random collection, but that doesn't detract from the book's value at all.
2) The opening theory is a little outdated. This is perfectly OK. Chernev doesn't spend a ton of time on the openings, and furthermore, most players who read this probably haven't seen some of the openings systems listed(many are still played today), or don't know the intention behind them.
3) It's written in descriptive notation. See my reviews on Reinfeld's 1001 books for my thoughts on this. In a nutshell it's not a deal breaker, and should in no way keep you from purchasing this gem.
I recently sold my copy of Logical Chess(reluctantly), but there is no way I'm ever getting rid of this one. Every student of the game should have it for its instructional and entertainment value.
