Book Review: Teachers use the "1st three years" to excuse poor teaching
Summary: 4 Stars
Often overlooked is the way in which teachers use "research" to justify their attitudes about students. If it is true that the first three years are so important, then "you can't blame me" for the failure of the student. Bruer appropriately and effectively challenges that excuse. It is a sad syndrome of teachers that many do in fact use most anything of that nature to blame the student or parent rather than accept the responsibility of good teaching. One doesn't need to look hard or far to see students, whose background was very poor at whatever level, blossom under the teaching of one who is not looking for excuses but for the potential that is in practically every student.
