Book Reviews of The Naked Capitalist

Book Review: Classic Americanist Work
Summary: 4 Stars

Written in 1970 after the author's best-selling The Naked Communist, this was a popular 1970's book on what would become known as "conspiracy theories". Even the mention of the word "conspiracy" will bring irrational enmity from many and a glazed-over look usually reserved for Uncle Morty's recounting of his abduction by aliens from others. So at least bear with me for a few minutes before you decide to read this book or condem it.

W. Cleon Skousen was an FBI agent from 1935-1951 and spent much of his time specifically on juvenile's and Communism. He received his law degree from George Washington University and was chief of police in Salt Lake City for 5 years and Editor of the leading police magazine "Law and Order" for 10 years. He has written numerous books on government and the US Constitution as well as books on parenting and religion. He retired from teaching at Brigham Young University in 1978. The author is no tin-foil hat crazy trying to prove that he has been probed by aliens. He is a sober, well-educated, and well-respected, well-honored American.

This background makes the allegations of this book even more astounding. This book reviews a book called Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time written by Georgetown Professor Carroll Quigley. Quigley also carries impeccable credentials and was cited by President William Clinton in his first inaugural speech as a prime influence. Quigley spent several years as an inside associate in the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a kind of quasi-official think tank that includes almost all high politicians, military officers, businessmen, educational, and cultural leaders of the country. This group interfaces with similar international groups such as the "Bilderbergers" and others. What all of these groups have in common is a disdain for individual liberty and a wish to control the world through socialism often called the "New World Order".

Quigley's 1300 page book notes that he has had access to these movers and shakers and their records and they are so entrenched and powerful, that he can tell their true story. Quigley had nothing but praise for them and their efforts. Skousen wrote this book, The Naked Capitalist, as a review and commentary on Quigley's book noting that if he (Skousen) had written even a fraction of what Quigley wrote, he (Skousen) would have been laughed out of the country. But since Quigley and his sources admitted that there was a shadowy group of insiders intent on destroying freedom and imposing an economic, political, and cultural New Word Order, Skousen could be comfortable that people would take at face value the undisputed truth that the so-called conspiracy theory was actually conspiracy fact.

The book is 130 pages of quotes, commentary and citations of other sources showing that there is a dangerous world-wide collection of elite who are intent on turning the world into their version of Utopia. The membership list includes basically every major political and military figure of the last 70 years. The last few pages of the book are a speech by Democratic Governor of New York and Presidential Candidate Al Smith, called "Betrayal of the Democratic Party" saying the same things as Skousen - that a group of elite insiders bent on suppressing freedom and controlling the world had seized the Democratic party.

The strength of the book is that Skousen uses a CFR supporter as the source of his commentary. You may disagree with Skousen, but you can't say that he is making anything up, because he isn't.

One measure of the accuracy of this book is whether the trends and movements identified by Quigley and Skousen have turned out as predicted. This book is, after all, nearly 40 years old. So here goes.

Skousen notes in pages 2-4 that American Banks, International Organizations such as the IMF and World Bank, and the US government agencies had been funding and pushing Latin America to the left for many years. Who can argue with Marxist narco-terrorists in control of Venezuela (Chavez), Brazil (Lula), Bolivia (Morales), Nicaragua (Ortega), Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Paraguay and most of the rest that Skousen was correct?

How about his chapters on Education, or the havoc that tax-free foundations are causing to American Freedom. (Check out the Congressional Reece Committee hearings for corroboration.)

Perhaps returning to the first sentence of the book - a quote from a defector from the top level of the US Communist Party - best sums up this book. "I think the Communist conspiracy is merely a branch of a much bigger conspiracy!"

Read the book and decide for yourself.
