Book Review: "Don't Get Even - - - Get Ahead!"

Ivana Trump was quoted once as saying "Don't get even - get ahead!" What better way for one to do just that with an employer who abused her power and crossed the line than to write a book about the entire experience, change the names, call it a work of "fiction", sell it and make more money than your ex-employer has! Kudos to the authors. Well done! On that alone, I have no choice but to rate this book with five stars.
I was expecting one of those laugh out loud, feel good chicklit plots with lots of zany, screwball comedy and a tinge of romance mixed in. What I got was a heartbreaking story with more drama than comedy. The characters were sadistically realistic and the storyline was very plausible. From the get-go, you know where this is going. The main character, Nan (Nanny) just did not have enough life experience to take a stand for herself with either the employer or the love interest.
My heart broke for the other family's nanny and the longtime housekeeper of Mr. X, who were both fired for no reason other than their employers' abuse of power.
This is a testament to the hostile work conditions that so many non-union, "at will" and particularly "under the table" employees have to endure. When an employer prefers to keep an employee off the books, it's a red flag. It's absolute power. You can't file a grievance, collect unemployment or sue your boss for harassment or back-pay for a job you technically don't have. And they all know it, that's why they "prefer" it that way.
It was heart wrenching for me watching the 4 year old suffer emotional abuse at the hands of the parents. I can only imagine what kind of sociopath this boy will turn out to be when he grows up. And I have known upper echelon people who raise their kids this way, this is no fairy tale.
I cannot understand why some of the reviewers here on Amazon are saying this was a "hilarious satire". I guess if you find trickle down abuse funny . . .
I wanted to rated this book 3 stars because the story did manage to keep my interest piqued right to the end but had to give it an additional 2 for the brilliant way two "at will" employees who got screwed - screwed back. WTG!
