Book Review: Bleak and suffocating novel about illicit love and suicide.
Summary: 3 Stars
As an aspiring writer, I hold Guillermo Arriaga right up there for his fantastic screenplays. Whilst I haven't enjoyed his novels quite as much, they are still far better than many other books currently stinking up the bestseller lists.
Like another reviewer, I considered bailing on this novel several times but kept on slogging through it. It's really difficult to care much about the main character and therefore keep turning pages. Arriaga gives you plenty of detail and the writing style is sharp. I just found the story a bit of a letdown and it became somewhat repetitive towards the end.
I also had problems with the ending and didn't believe some of the incidents that happened (particularly at the zoo).
Judging from reviews posted on Amazon, they didn't do much of a job adapting this to the screen. A shame really, as there are elements there that would make a visually interesting and harrowing movie.
