Book Reviews of The Notebook

Book Review: A Stupid LIttle Sob Story
Summary: 1 Stars

I read this silly little volume as I was being driven from New Hampshire to Montreal. I should have thrown it off the Champlain Bridge, but I didn't want to get arrested for polluting the St. Lawrence River. This book is unrealistic and sappy, and, although I am a romantic, this story just didn't ring true. What happened to the great literature of our time? And this pathetic book is on the bestseller lists?

Book Review: A Tearjerker that Will Melt Even the Stoniest Heart!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to confess that when I read this book, I was in the car on a roadtrip with my parents. I had a horrible head cold, and they were riding up front while I huddled in the backseat with this book. Now, I NEVER cry at movies or books -- for heaven's sake, right? -- but by the time I was done with this beautiful love story, I was weeping furtively, concealing my tears under the sniffly guise of my cold. This story is absolutely gorgeous. I mean, this book violates absolutely every rule against melodrama, manipulation, or maudlin emotion, but it WORKS. What can I say? You grow to love these characters, and their story unfolds so tantalizingly and so carefully, your whole heart will become invested in their experiences and decisions. The only thing now is that I dare not read the book again... I'm afraid my husband will come home and find me in a most satisfying heap on the floor, weeping inelegantly! But see for yourself!

Book Review: A Tender and Timeless Love Story
Summary: 5 Stars

It's 1946 and Allie is about to be married when she sees in the newspaper that her first love, Noah is returning home from the war. Though it's been fourteen years, her love for him still smolders, so she goes to see him and they realize that their love has never died. From that point on the story follows their ever growing love and we are given a very rare glimpse of true love that goes on for years. Then Allie comes down with Alzheimer's, but Noah remains steady and true while the disease seizes her mind.

This book is a story of two people who find each other after a long absence and have the courage to let their love guide them, instead of giving in to those who want to keep them apart, and they have almost half a century together of a love that is rare and precious. Sparks has told his story well, maybe too well, because to see the love Noah has for Allie during her suffering is just so sad. I cried and cried. And you know, I gave a few thoughts to my first love. I was thirteen, he was all of fifteen, too old me, but he was so fine. I wonder what he's doing now. I wonder if this book would have moved him as much as it moved me. Is it a girl thing?

And I wonder how a man could have written such emotion, could have pulled those tears out of me. No, it's not a girl thing. We're all part of the human experience. If you've read THE NOTEBOOK then you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't you should.

Book Review: A True Expression of Everlasting Love; For Guys & Girls
Summary: 5 Stars

If I could rate this book on a scale from 1-10, I would give it a 12. Unfortunately, we can only give up to five stars.

Noah's love for Allie is inspiring. He proved that no matter what happens, he intended to keep the vows he made on their wedding day. "For better or for worse, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live." He never gave up on her. That is the kind of marriage every couple should have. The book is so passionate and real. You can relate to the everyday things that happen in the story, but you can also find the escape that every reader looks for in a good romance novel. Starting with the first page of this book, I was captivated by every word that I read. By the end, I was in uncontrollable tears and cried for a long time after finishing. However, I love good romance, and I love to cry. People EXPECT me to cry....Keep reading.

My husband is not the romantic type, and he is DEFINATELY not the reading type. However, he asked me what I wanted for my birthday, so I told him that all I wanted was for him to read "The Notebook". I thought he could pick up a few ideas. He half-heartedly agreed and told me he would begin the following day. I was surprised at how quickly he was nearing the end so I sat beside him pretending to read a book of my own. Suddenly, I saw tears escaping his reddening eyes, and heard a faint sniffle from time to time. I can't tell you how much I wanted to know what part he was reading, but I sat quietly and waited for the end. After about ten minutes, he put the book down and, surprisingly, reached for my book and sat it down as well. He turned to me and stretched out his arms. I held him close while he cried, and I couldn't help but cry (and laugh to myself at the same time) to see my macho-man finally at his weakness.

Overall, I have to say this is a spectacular book.

Book Review: A True Love Story!
Summary: 5 Stars

I sat down this weekend thinking that I would take my time to read "the Notebook" but instead I devoured every page. This book touched my heart in a way that no book ever has. I felt every word, and imagined every scene. It was truely beautiful.
