Book Review: A decent novel that could have been amazing

There are an awful lot of Civil war novels. In fact in historical fiction they're almost sub genera. Because they are all set in a war its hard to know which ones will suit your personal taste-not be too violent or too political-and so far I've had fairly good luck with the one's I've read. "Gone With the Wind", "Shaman" and now "The Notorious Mrs. Winston."
Claire Winston is newly married and home from her troubling honeymoon tour of Europe where she learned her husband was nothing like the man she thought he was. War is about to break out and more states are subsiding from the union. Claire's family has long been part of the underground railroad but now she falls into an ethical quandary-for she has just fallen in love with her husbands nephew, John, who is intent on fighting with his Kentucky brothers, if only because he cannot fight against them or leave them to die alone.
It's all a moot point when Claire's husband-jealous of someone sullying her if nothing else-finds a way to keep her and John apart. But when Claire hears John is wounded she stops at nothing to reach him-including disguising herself as a young boy and joining up with his regimen, Morgan's Raiders, in spite of her feelings about the war.
The road Claire travels is anything but easy and the fact that she does not believe in the fight she has walked into is makes it nothing but harder. But she loves John with a passion and that is the only thing she cares about in the end, so she soldiers on.
This is a pretty good book. It's not amazing, it's not terrible. It falls into the category of books that I enjoyed but wouldn't consider reading again. Claire makes for a good, if not terribly original heroine. The book has a slightly annoying shift about two thirds through when it starts having some chapters written in first person by Claire, when the book up until then had been in third. But all and all this is a decently written story, though the plot had the potential to be amazing.
Three stars.
