Book Reviews of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary

Book Review: English teachers nightmare
Summary: 1 Stars

You would think that with the name "official dictionary" , it would use proper english that we were taught in school. I cannot believe some of the words that are in this book. My English teachers would not like to know that there is a source out there teaching opposite lessons that they are fighting for children to learn. Examples: the multiple of sock is not sox and I never heard of very used as verier. It drives me crazy to see some of the words in this dictionary. Uh is a sound not a word, if it is then why isn't arg in the dictionary too?

Book Review: Offensively Lacking
Summary: 2 Stars

I was glad to find a new edition of this book, as there have been many new words added since the publication of the second edition which I have been using, yet there is one major problem. This is not an edition for those who value language or reality, as all the so-called "bad" words have been removed. Nor does it inform the buyer of this fact clearly, as it should, on the cover, but three pages in in the preface. While I understand that there are people who think that they will burst into flames if they see or hear "The F Word" or the like, these words DO exist, are well known (even by the children this book proports to be protecting) and common, and should still be listed.

If one finds certain words offensive, then one should refrain from playing them oneself. Sorry folks, but ignoring things that make you uncomfortable does not make them cease to exist, no matter how much you may wish it so.

To censor a dictionary is the height of offensiveness. I expected better of Mirriam-Webster, especially since they were the first publisher to include "vulgarities" in their dictionaries in the first place.

I'd also like to note that the first two editions were not only endorsed by the National Scrabble Association, but were also the official reference dictionaries for tournaments and clubs. This new edition makes no claim to the latter. It is only "endorsed by the NSA for recreational and school use." I'd like to find out which dictionary the "pros" use and stick with that. For now, we will use both the second AND fourth editions. By unanimous vote, house rules state that there will be NO censorship at our Scrabble table. Please leave your prudery at the door.

For many years, I have been an avid Scrabble player; my previous Scrabble dictionary is very well used!! I've been waiting for a long time for a newer version and this one is just terrific!!!

Small, but clear print, finding it a very useful book to own. wish I'd had it ages ago.

Book Review: Great Improvement in OSPD
Summary: 5 Stars

For about 50 years, I have been a veteran Scrabble Player and have participated in many tournaments, as well as playing on line, internationally.
The updated edition of OSPD is excellent, because they separated special sections with prefixes, making it much easier to find your way around.
The only complaint I have is that the delivery charges were much higher than the book, forcing me to rely more on local or second-hand books.
