Book Reviews of The Omnivore's Dilemma for Kids: The Secrets Behind What You Eat

Book Review: A Teachers Choice
Summary: 4 Stars

Today's nation is one that is more conscience of what they eat. I never followed that trend until I read this book and discovered where my food came from. This book opens your eyes to where your food comes from and the choices you have as a consumer.

This book discusses the role corn plays in our diet and the facts will surprise you! Corn is a vegetable I don't even like and come to find out I eat a lot of it. Part 2 of the book discusses the industrial organic meal and the truth behind food labeled "organic" and where to really find organic food. Also, this book looks at not only what we eat but how the environment is effected by what we eat. Growing up my Grandmother would buy meat from a local meat market and are vegetables from the farmers market. Who knew that small town folks were actually trendsetters!

This book isn't written to persuade you to be a vegetarian or to preach to you about what you should or should not eat. I was a meat eating omnivore when I started and finished reading this book. The author even states that he eats meat. It just gives you chooses of what you can eat and informs you of where your food comes from. The choice of what you eat is your own but wouldn't you want to know the truth about where your food comes from? Also, what you are actually feeding your family? It is a choice we have to make as consumers and part of the choice is the price we will pay to be healthy eaters.

This young readers edition is meant for older students to read and as educators we should encourage that. However, this book raises a lot of questions and concerns and might be to graphic for some readers. The author discusses specific ways different animals are killed, which might be to graphic for some readers. Although, this book would be a great choice as an example of pollution and how the choices some people make not only affects our bodies but our environment. Instead of teaching students that pollution is when you throw a piece of trash on the ground, you could teach students ways we pollute they may not know. As parents or educators it is our responsibility to educate students about pollution, in order for us to figure out ways to prevent it. Teachers could also use this book to have students form an opinion in a writing piece. Some students might be moved by the book and want to buy their food from local vendors. Other students might feel that it is ok to buy their food in grocery stores. Teachers could have students make that choice.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and discussed it many times with my friends. My friends and I found this book to be interesting and it made us think twice about where we bought our food. I would recommend this book to both teachers and students.
