The One from the Other by Philip Kerr Summary and Reviews
Book Reviews of The One from the OtherBook Review: Post-war Germany
Philip Kerr has written a gritty series of suspense novels about Bernhard Gunther, an ex-policeman private detective working in Berlin in pre- and post-war Germany. This addition takes place is 1948. It is multifarious and suspenseful with large doses of hidden identities, betrayals and thuggery. A unique aspect to Kerr's novels is that they are told from the point of view of a German who loves his country and wants to survive despite his contempt for the Nazis. He hates the post-war American, British, and Russian occupation of his country and the American's deNazification policy. "The One from the Other" finds Bernie deceived and set up to take the fall for a series of crimes. He uses his street smarts and ingenuity to deal with the situation. An added bonus: Bernie thinks and talks like Sam Spade and Philip Marlow.
