Book Review: A study bible?
Summary: 2 Stars
On the positive side:
1. This is a handsome book, well produced, sturdy, with decently legible print, though the paper is a touch overthin and transparent;
2. It is pleasant, finally, to have available a full English bible with an Old Testament based on the Septuagint, which is most surely the version used widely by the people who wrote the New Testament.
On the less positive side:
1. I am no expert judge of the translation, but the description of how it was arrived at leads me to wonder whether it was not 'cobbled together' somewhat. The few key passages I have looked at so far read elegantly and clearly, but contain no great revelation over other translations. The key interest is, of course, the difference between the Septuagint and the Masoretic text, and that I will have to look at further;
2. This is by no stretch of the imagination a study bible in my understanding of that term. I expect a detailed critical apparatus, thorough cross-referencing and comparative textual commentary in a good study bible. This bible provides principally a doctrinal commentary from one standpoint only. Indeed, amusingly, it makes some Roman Catholic bibles look positively free-thinking!
On the negative side:
1. The supporting material I find positively offensive. Indeed, reading the opening article on the Orthodox Church, I am saddened to find that institution, which I have long respected, adopting a crude evangelizing posture similar to that it has so long - and often so justly! - criticised the Roman Catholic church for. This history is presented in a brutally one-sided manner with scant respect for historical fact and a marked refusal to see fault as being anything but on one side. I must say it had exactly the opposite effect to the intended one in my own case.
To sum up:
A useful addition to the library of an addicted bible collector like myself, if one can stomach some of the supporting material, but be aware of what you are buying!
