Book Review: A look at a familiar story from a surprising new angle

I found this book totally fascinating-it helps to be familiar with the historical background to really appreciate this unusual new (and sometimes shocking)viewpoint. The claustrophobic world of the court is brought to life through the eyes of Mary Boleyn, lover of the king before her more famous sister. At times she seems almost hapless in the face of her ambitious, scheming family whose relentless social climbing is quite grotesque. Anne's decline into despair and desperation is vividly portrayed. The suggestion that her last pregnancy was conceived with her brother George is a controversial viewpoint which I had not come across before. It is generally believed that the charges of incest laid against them were false, but maybe not! The momentous changes of the Reformation are seen as personal rather than political, and are only discussed by the Boleyns in the light of the effect they have on their personal family ambition. Were the Howards really like this? The Duke of Norfolk is almost too one-dimentional - a hard-as-nails martinet in complete control of his family. At the same time, the story has moments of humanity and warmth, especially where Mary and her children come together. This is a refreshing new look at a familiar story, and a real eye-opener onto the cloying, dangerous world of the Tudor court.
