Book Reviews of The Other Boleyn Girl (Movie Tie-In) (Boleyn)Book Review: A GREAT READ - EXCELLENT Summary: 5 StarsThis is the first book by this author that I've read. I bought it because I'm interested in the Tudor times. But quite a few historicals I've read lately have been a disappointment. So many pages of tedious description to plough through in some books. But not this title which I thought captured the essence of the period wonderfully. I was transported back in time. The little details given such as food, dress all helped to set the scene. And Anne Boleyn came over as a villain which I believe some sypathisers didn't like. I too felt quite sorry for her once but not any more. (Of course we'll never know the truth.) All in all I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
Book Review: Addictive, fantastic, wonderfully written... Summary: 5 StarsThis book is a must for any reader who enjoys period novels. The romance in this book is written so well that I found myself feeling the same emotions as the main character, Mary. This book gives an insight into the world that surrounded one of the most famous English kings of all time, Henry VIII. Philippa Gregory reveals a side of courtly life which I never knew about and the twisted lies and deceit definately make for good reading! I quickly became addicted to this book and the only bad part of reading it was when I finished it!! I will always treasure this book and will read it again and again. Anyone who enjoyed "Katherine" will love this book.
Book Review: The Other Boleyn Girl Summary: 4 StarsWhat a fantastic read! I still have 100 pages to go but am completely entraced by the Tudor world so wonderfully depicted by Philippa Gregory. The faces in those old portraits have become real people, with real feelings, wants and needs. This book has inspired me to learn more about the Tudors, a subject I previously had only a passing interest in. Thanks to the author for inspiring a new passion and giving me a good excuse to pester my hubby to visit Hampton and Hever with me!
Book Review: An enchanting read Summary: 5 StarsThe book held me captivated. Based in fact but at times straying from the truth (Mary was not as pure as the book would lead you to believe.) This book left me wanting more. It is, though, unlikely that events actually followed in the way that the novel states and I wish there was more information on this women in the form of other books as i would love to know whether many of the actions in the novel are the truth or simply entertaining. A wonderful historical novel but should not be taken to be gospel truth. Certainly worth a read and if possible read it slowly otherwise once you have finished it you with be sad you read it so fast! It's that good!
Book Review: A cut above the rest Summary: 5 StarsI normally hate anything that can be branded as 'historical romance' because inevitably the ones I pick up are poorly written, show sloppy research and are apallingly cliched. Philippa Gregory consistently transcends all these problems. Her research is detailed to the minutiae, such as the food eaten, the fastenings on Mary and Anne's dresses and much more that would give the game away.It is often difficult to appreciate the mind frame, especially for a woman, of the historical character because it involves seeing the world and one's place in it in a different light, but Gregory makes it so implicit in her narrative and the way that the characters act that one is wholly caught up in the plot and the period. Plus of course she's got a stonking good plot line, brilliant characterisation, a concern with broader issues and an empathy for all her characters - goodies and baddies! If you appreciate well written and original books then read this one, and I highly reccommend 'A Respectable Trade'; another tour de force from this outstanding author.
