This book was required reading for my young teen in Jr High. I'm sorry - the reviews were ok and it came recommended by the Lib Jrnl and my sons' English teacher, so we tried it. But you know what? This book is so over the top, with trials/situations that 90% of all people on the planet would not even come close to having to deal with, it's bunk. Badly written, silly extreme multiculturalism at its worse, stereo types abound, and did I mention it's badly written? Let's not forget the foul language to make it adult enough to get the kids/readers attention, I tried to read it aloud to see what my family thought (usually a marker of a good book) by the time we were in the 4th chapter, we're making fun of the main and minor characters, teachers, situations, catastrophes - everything.The further we read into the book the worse it got. Please, all families have problems but this is just kissing up to the school/library buyers. This book goes down on my list of one of the worse books ever written and was pushed by school librarians/teachers! - who should know better. Kids should be required to read better books in school than this one. It's junk. Sorry
