Book Review: diff. than I expected, but still v. good

The description for this book is misleading, but forgivably so as it is a great marketing description. There's only about 2 photos of Michael Crawford (in costume) and about 4 of Sarah Brightman (also in costume / makeup), although one of Sarah is AMAZING and worth the price alone. ;) There are lots of nice pics of the dearly missed Steve Barton. The author/photographer worked backstage on the production, and basically he and Steve took a camera and decided to fool around w/ trying to take professionally good looking shots of their friends in the cast. The quality of the paper in the book is not archival because the book is meant to be a catalogue from which you are to order quality reprints. (I know NO ONE is looking here to do that, but that's the explanation.) They are no low-quality images though -- they are just as clear as any other black and white pics on non-photo paper which appear in biographies and books on theater. The majority of them are full page or half-page. With the exception of some really weird eye-candy shots of part of Steve (!), the photos show the detail of the costumes, the layout of some of the backstage areas, and the view from the theater's roof. It's a great bit of history of Phantom from backstage -- but backstage as in ordinary backstage like as from say a dresser's point of view, not from a "Behind The Scenes" documentary's point of view. The accompanying text has some glaring typographical errors in it, but is equally charming, candid and "ordinary" -- no pretense assumed to make things sound extra exciting. There's a few Phantom anecdotes included, and a wonderful essay by one of the original cast members that is a great read for fans of the show. But overall this is NOT the book for a typical Phantom fan, so if you are just looking for something to go with your t-shirt and mug, this is not for you. If you already know all about all the behind the scenes stuff and magic tricks from the George Perry book etc., and you still wanna know what "it's really like" to have been there, well, then this IS the book for you!!! (Minus, as I said, it is NOT about Michael & Sarah.)
So, in short, it was TOTALLY not what I expected. Not what I ever would have imagined. But a very worthwhile and captivating READ as well as the photographs.
(There's also a *few* nearly-from-the-wings shots of the company bows on some last nights and replacement cast first nights at the back of the book -- like Sarah's last night before she left for NYC w/ ALW on stage w/ her.)
