Book Reviews of The Pillars of the Earth (Deluxe Edition) (Oprah's Book Club)

Book Review: WHAT A BOOK . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

... it is incredible ! ! ! Follet writes over a thousand pages about cathedreals ...

... and I can't let go!

I don't even like churches! ! !

How does he do this?

Book Review: Quite simply an EPIC.
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't read a great deal, but I was given this by my father as a book to read pool-side. I hesitated when he mentioned it revolved around cathedral-building (who wouldn't?), but he asked me to trust him and....once opened, I couldn't put it down! In fact, the way Follett manages to subtly impart knowledge on the subject is incredible. Whilst the epic story with love, hate, treachery, good and genuinely evil weaves its way, you even find yourself developing an interest in the craft of the master-builder.

Big it may be, but I've read it twice myself and lent it to countless others. A superb read.

Book Review: Fantastic, without doubt the best book I ever read.
Summary: 5 Stars

To sum up this epic masterpiece in such a small space is nigh on impossible. The story, although this may sound dull, basically revolves around the building of a 12th century Cathedral and all that happens around it. In those times the Cathedral was the focal point for society so it actually proves an incredibly engrossing tale. The amount of research Follet puts into his work is obvious and the picture he builds of life in the 12th century is fascinating. The best part of the book however is the characterisation. The story spans several generations and the empathy you feel towards the characters by the end in immense.

To sum up, I would recommend this book to anyone. Please don't be put off by the seemingly boring subject matter, this is an epic tale about people from a master storyteller.

Book Review: A hell of a chunky book but amazing throughout.
Summary: 5 Stars

Follett's cathedral fascination leads to too much detail at times, but the whole story and the characters' lives are so rich and everything is so interestingly intertwined that I truly loved to read this book. In fact, after the last page I felt a bit deserted by all these characters I had got to know so well. Good one!

Book Review: A compelling read that is full of every emotion possible
Summary: 5 Stars

This is most definately one of Ken Follets greatest achievements. The simplicity of some of the characters is a contrast to the situations that are imposed upon them. The book is primarily based around a single church in the county of Shiring and the people who live within and around it. It travels through a few generations of families who are placed in turmoil time and time again, not always bouncing back. It seems to be harsh, yet true, account of life in the middle ages and for that reason alone makes the story so real. Yet the real passion is in the way Follet has desribed the relationships of love, hate, deceit, and trechary. The book is alive with so much that it easy to get lost for hours at a time. Definately worth a read at any price.
