Book Reviews of The Pillars of the EarthBook Review: Absolutely gripping & a wonderful example of the craft Summary: 5 StarsPillars of the Earth is a beautifully crafted book setting out what life was likke in the middle ages. The building of a monastry and the life of the artisans and the aristocracy along with the scandals and disgraceful behaviour of the upper class makes you want to see the baddies get their cumuppance !!! A mighty tomb and a reflection on Olde England !
Book Review: I've never looked at a cathedral in the same way again Summary: 5 StarsFrom the outset, Pillars of the Earth gripped me. My imagination was captured by the day to day lives of some of the most real characters I have met between the pages of a novel. Each character evokes a response: compassion, respect, revulsion or even lust. The story spans many years, yet gives remarkable detail concerning the changing politics, lifestyle and even architectural and building practices of the day. I was given the book by a friend several years ago, and have given copies as gifts several times. My own copy is so battered from being read, reread, lent and returned that I'm now needing a replacement.
Book Review: Full of cliche, wonderful nevertheless Summary: 5 StarsIt's been about five years since I've read this book, but the characters and the adventures surrounding the cathedrals they built have stayed with me, particulary when I see a cathedral. The reader is so much part of the architectural and building process of these fictional buildings, that I remember stuff five years on. I think that is a mark of real literary achievment by Follett. It is a wonderful book, despite his cliched villians and heroes. Ken Follett never fails to excite his readers. This is his best book by far.
Book Review: A literary masterpiece Summary: 5 StarsHaving not read a book for many years, this was given to me as a present. Follett has created a superb combination of historical fact and fiction and turned it into a gripping read. Reading this book will open the readers eyes to the wealth of history contained in our cathedrals as well as providing many hours of thrilling reading.
Book Review: Ye Olde England Blockbuster Summary: 3 StarsAt over a thousand pages long this book is almost as significant an undertaking as building the cathedral it describes. I must say though that as I progressed through the book I found the plot weighing increasingly heavily on me even when there wasn't too much happening. Still it is worth reading, although not necessarily for the architectural descriptions which seemed a little incomprehensible to me. But if you like your baddies to be really bad and your heroes to be really heroic then this is a book you'll enjoy.
