Book Review: "Darkness there, and nothing more." THE RAVEN...Edgar Allan Poe
Summary: 4 Stars
When I started reading Michael Connelly, "The Lincoln Lawyer" was my first taste of a great author. And when I saw "The Poet" lurking about on the bookshelf at a local bookstore, I just had to check it out. Now, Stephen King gives a forward before the opening chapter, and gives praise. The first line of this novel says, "Death is my beat." Well, that's one way to capture a reader's attention, isn't it? But Stephen King goes on to say that the story is genuinely terrifying. Now that's saying something! Stephen King is terrified by Michael Connelly's, "The Poet!" Well, then, here goes.
In the beginning, Jack McEvoy is faced with a tragedy. His brother, Sean, is found dead, and from the looks of it, has committed suicide. And if that weren't enough, the only explanation is a simple note. And that simple note says, "Out of space, out of time." And while Jack is convinced that Sean would never kill himself, he investigates further. And he finds that other murders occurred, and they happened like his brother's occurred. And they come with messages, straight from the mind of Edgar Allan Poe. And the search continues, and Jack searches deeper. Being a reporter, Jack tags along with the FBI, and ends up with more than he bargained for.
In the end, you might think you have it all figured out. Then, like a dog on an unbreakable chain...WHAM!! You'll be yanked right back into reality when you find out what hit you. You might see it coming, you might not. And while I walked away from reading a great story, I also walked away not completely satisfied.
Edgar Allan Poe was a master of his craft, there is no doubt about it! When he wrote "The Raven," early on it was written, "Darkness there, and nothing more." And this does get pretty dark, at least by some standards. But it also remained quite readable, which gives me the excuse to pursue "The Scarecrow," once it hits the shelves! Man, Connelly's gonna have me packing a lunch on that one, I bet!
