Book Reviews of The Polish Way: A Thousand-Year History of the Poles and Their CultureBook Review: first-rate history Summary: 5 StarsAdam Zamoyski has done a wonderful job of putting together a story that is very well told. Political and social movements are clearly outlined, while developments in the literature and fine arts are not forgotten either.. Judiciously chosen illustrations and maps accompany the text (a pity they're in black and white). This is no book to fall asleep over! I readily forgive him his at times insistent rhapsodizing about Zamosc, his ancestral home, and his aristocratic forebears. Poland has been served very well with this tome and I hope more people will get to know about the trajectory of this very human nation.
Book Review: Setting the record straight on the Polish people. Summary: 4 StarsIf, even after the display of courage of the Solidarity labor movement during the 1980s and the world leadership of Pope John Paul II, some people still cling to the tired stereotype of the dumb, ignorant Pole, they should be made to read "The Polish Way". Adam Zamoyski makes the point very clear of what an impressive and complex nation the Poles have forged despite animosity from neighboring countries (for example, Prussia/Germany, Austria, and Russia/U.S.S.R.) and the indifference from the Western democracies to their plight. And what a wonderful culture Poland has created; rich in art, architecture, literature, music, and mature political thinking. Being Polish from my father's side, I now feel a special pride towards my ancestors' accomplishments after reading this book which I highly recommend.
Book Review: A MUST READ FOR AMERICANS OF POLISH ANCESTRY Summary: 5 StarsA MUST READ FOR AMERICANS OF POLISH ANCESTRY WHO WISH TO UNDERSTAND THE HISTORICAL COMPLEXITIES, TRAGEDIES, BETRAYALS AND DOGGED DETERMINATION OF THE POLISH PEOPLE TO EXIST AS A NATION IN SPITE OF OVERWHELMING ODDS TO ERASE THEIR NATION FROM THE FACE OF THIS EARTH.
Book Review: Excellent, well written and informative history book. Summary: 4 StarsThis is one of the better history books I have read. The author clearly explains the history of Poland without too much clutter. The book is easy to read and flows well. This is an excellent book for those wishing to begin to study the history of Poland. The maps and photos inside the book shows the dynamic borders of Poland through the centuries and the author demostrates that Poland like the rest of Europe wasn't an island nation but part of a bigger Europe.
