Book Review: the political mind

I read this book in participation with a book group. It was thought that the subject matter would be helpful in learning how the world of politics really works. As it turned out we were of a mixed opinion about the authors thesis. One lady essentially said that she didn't like being told how to think. Another wondered if this book had provided the basis of now President Obama's campaign. The opinions were varied and sometimes surprising. Essentially, the author seemed to be suggesting that the concept of how people think as expressed during the enlightenment was wrong: people are not always logical or reasonable and this is why Democrats, stuck in the old enlightenment, generally loose elections. Instead, the author contends that people as a group are motivated though an emotional framing process. A process that Republicans understand and use to win elections. The author explains how and why this new understanding of thinking works(a new enlightenment), and why Democrats need to adopt it. I thought it a good read and essential for an improved dialogue between Democrats and Republicans.
