Book Review: A good book.

Dr Kantor clearly does not just regard literature as interesting or useful, she is in love with it.
I had expected a political book and there is some antisocialist (or as Americans might put it "antiliberal") stuff in it. However, the work is more a book written in sorrow than in anger. Dr Kantor wants people to read and think about great works of literature, but has found that American college courses are worse than useless in this regard - this, rather than political matters, is what really upsets her.
I am not a cultured man, I have not read the majority of the works of literature that Dr Kantor writes about here, but I have been inspired to try read the works I have not read, and to look again at those works I have read in the past.
I have not rated the book as five stars because I would like Dr Kantor to have said more about the minority of good English literature courses that do exist in the United States. Although the book does admit that there are a few colleges in America which make a serious effort to teach English literature, the general position of the book is that all a person can do is to read the works themselves (and some well chosen books about them). This is fair enough for someone of my age, but a young person (who has years that they can devote full time) should be told "if you really love literature these are the colleges that will help you study it....."
