Book Review: A second look at an alcoholic father

Rick Bragg's relationship with his father had for years been about as warm and fuzzy as a porcupine occasionally found dead on the shoulders of Alabama highways. In his first memoir, //All Over But the Shoutin'//, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist documented the harsh reality that was his life (and particularly his mother's) for years thanks to the hard drinking and long absences of his father Charles.
But years went by, and at forty-six, Bragg married a woman with three sons. Two were mostly grown, but the youngest was a boy who became a son to him. The new dynamic caused him to revisit the paternal past he had mainly brushed aside. In his second book, //Ava's Man,// he talked about his maternal grandparents--the family he claimed. In //The Prince of Frogtown//, Bragg reclaims the paternal side, warts and all, of course.
Bragg's writing is a fine example of Southern literature. It is thoroughly steeped in the hills of Alabama's Appalachia with its characters the almost-stereotypical simple, hardworking folk of the backwoods. What keeps them from being truly stereotypes is Bragg's kinship with them--his sympathy and understanding. He brings to life the people and lifestyle, as well as the place and times he documents. Readers can feel the heat in May that "has settled across the foothills like a damp dishrag." The book, like Bragg, can tend to get overly self-involved at times, but it is, overall, a beautiful piece of writing.
