Book Reviews of The Princess Bride (Ballantine Reader's Circle)

Book Review: Simply the best.
Summary: 5 Stars

What can be said about The Princess Bride? I've never been able to read a book so many times. I'm still not sure what it is about the book that does it. Goldman puts it best when he says "nobody writes books like that anymore." He was of course referring to the "prepare to die" scene. And i think thats what makes the book so good. It does take us back into the romantic age.

As a young boy what can be more exciting than duelling dukes, saving damsels, storming castles and doing it all in a cool black outfit? And as a young girl what can more thrilling than true loves rescuing each other, beutiful princesses and dashing heroes?

Yes the book has all this and more. When you read this book you become the characters. When a book does this you know it's something special.

Everybody should read it.

Book Review: Good but could have been better
Summary: 3 Stars

Am I the only person to think this book could and should have been a classic if only William Goldman had kept his ego in check? The actual story here is very slight and has a tendency to jump around confusing the reader. If Goldman had paid more attention to this and less to spending nearly half the book (!!!) talking directly to the reader this would have been a more lucid, well paced story.

Goldman's rambling style is perfectly suited to his brilliant non-fiction work such as "Adventures In The Screen Trade" and "Which Lie Did I Tell" but here it almost kills the story. Also, judging from past entries on Amazon most readers are totally confused about the existence of Morgenstern (he doesn't). I would strongly recommend that future readers skip everything in italics and just get on with the story!

Book Review: This book ROCKS!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite books ever! The story is fast paced and awesome and Goldman doesn't weigh it down with alot of prose. I feel like I have to respond to a review about Goldman's "rambling style" takes away from the story. It is making fun of "classic" writers (ex. Hawthorne, Dumas) who ruin a really good, exciting, moving story with to much prose. The whole point of the book is in the italics that you advise people to skip over. What Goldman is saying is that a good story is enough, all the satire and figurative language and stuff that writers use is unnecessary and ruin the experience. Remember how the "good parts" his father read to him changed his life, but his son couldn't bear to read past the 1st chapter of the "origional" version?

Book Review: Wow!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I think this book is a powerful story that put's a spin on your average, everyday fairy tale!
With it's mixture of action, romance, comedy, and modern writing it creates a story that entertains all.
The character Inigo Montoya I particulary loved. His rough exterior could be easily seen through, though he was not 2D, his soft centre was lovable and gentle. I think that blend of characteristics in one character is very powerful and without him in the story it would not have been as good as it was.
I saw the film before i read the book (I was only about 9). I didn't realise it was made from a book untill I as 13 (I am now 14) the film encouraged me to read th book. When I had finished the film wasn't as good. It got some things the wrong way round and missed out great chunks.
Th e Princess Bride is a beautiful tale, perfect for any one who can read, basically!
