Book Review: Just when you thought it was safe to read again...

Ahhh, there's something to be said for old favorites. I purchased this Mad Dog Press publication back in the early 1990s at the now-defunct museum "Capone's Chicago", and still enjoy flipping through it today. It's a lively collection of Al Capone's most infamous quotes. Supplementary material includes a tabulation of 'Great Moments in Chicago Gangland History', the original Public Enemies List of 1930, and an essay on the 'Chicago Typewriter' a.k.a. the Thompson submachine gun.
William J. Helmer and Mark Levell had a great time putting this volume together, as evidenced by the humorous commentary and playful approach to a subject that moralists would insist is no laughing matter. The authors poke fun at Chicago's Caponeophobics via such passages as, "So maybe Al Capone WAS this country's most notorious gangster, vice lord, bootlegger, and all-around hoodlum who machine-gunned his competitors, dodged his taxes, ended up in Alcatraz and eventually died of syphilis. Nobody's perfect." I also got a chuckle out of Helmer's assertion that "We have the Big Fellow to thank for yet another lesson: the importance of practicing Safe Sex."
It's a fun read, and a good sense of humor is a prequisite. Since mine is pretty unconventional, I enjoyed "The Quotable Al Capone" immensely.
