What happened to Europe's art collections during the second world war? For those who were alive at the time, and those who have been born since, the answer turns out to be absolutely fascinating. There were crimes, there were deceits, there were valiant attempts at saving collections, items were stolen and 'acquired' by Hitler and his acolytes, by natives of other nations both involved in the conflict and not. Military history may or may not interest you, but this account, which is extremely well researched, adds colour to the reality of inter-national conflict where great works of art become the hostages to conquerers and bystanders alike. Fabulous read. Nicholas should be congratulated for the painstaking work necessary to produce this incredibly informative tome.
